Sisterhood....
We all have those moments that stick with us for our entire life. It can be the birth of your children, graduating college, getting married, losing someone you love to cancer and the list goes on.
This past Sunday as I sat with 2 dear ladies who have been nothing short of a blessing the word sisterhood came up. 9 years ago my life began to change. I was 26, going to college full time, working full time and had just had an emergency hysterectomy. I felt my world was crumbling right before my eyes. My marriage was less then great. I had turned to alcohol as my force and my escape. With those decisions came more poor decisions. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I thought there was no way God could love me, that people in the church could love me. I felt hopeless and helpless. Then on a July afternoon in 2006, I sat with 2 people who have become life long friends. As we sat there and tears ran down my face. My friend Dorynda looked at me across from her desk. Tears rolling down her face, she told me something no one had ever said. That Jesus loved me. That His intent for my life was not to be in a horrible marriage, to be depressed and the list goes on. But He loved me! I remember sitting there fighting back the tears... Next both Dorynda and Lisa did one more thing no one had ever done. They prayed with me, out loud where I could actually hear the prayer. In 26 years of my life this was a first. For the first time in my life I felt the true love of Jesus, all because 2 people, 2 friends, 2 people who are now my sisters in Christ stepped out in faith, and shared the love of Jesus with a broken sole.
So to answer what is sisterhood??? I can tell you from first hand experience, it is far more than just a bunch of women coming together to worship the Lord. For me, it started 9 years ago. It started when people stepped out in faith, and refused to give up on me. It started when they didn't care about where I was at yesterday, but instead cared about where I was today and where I would be every day after. Sisterhood is about relationships. It is about reaching out to people that we might normally never reach out to. It is picking each other up when we have fallen down. It is doing life together! It is speaking truth to a situation and not just want you think they want to hear.
I was once the biggest hypocrite when it came to Christians, and being judgmental. I thought there is no way they will ever love me, or want to be there for me. I had and still make so many mistakes. But the beauty of the sisterhood is that we are all human. We all put our jeans on one leg at a time. We all have struggles, and we all have strengths. But the greatest part of all this is that together we are stronger then we could ever be on our own. Sisterhood is accountability. It is lifting the broken hearted, celebrating life together.
Sisterhood is when you have made a mistake, and so many in the secular world would turn there back on you, judge you, and tear you down. But the sisterhood, that is when your friend who lead you to the Lord will sit in a locked bedroom with you, and cry with you, pray with and tell you that its OK. That it is never easy turning your life to God. That when you say yes to Jesus, the devil will fight 10x harder to knock you right back down. Sisterhood...... A powerful phrase that has the power to change history!
